Bife de lomo Uruguayo (pronounce ‘uruguascho’

Last night i had a fantastic steak in Punta del Este. It was really a feast, a nice bife de lomo (saignant). Even more due to the fact that i was having a veggie period on the estancia in the Sierras de Rocha 🙂

steak argentino…….

Hongkong here we are… love it already!!

Sometimes you feel this buzz and sometimes you just don’t. Hongkong is definitely a city that conquered my heart just upon arrival. Despite the fact that the taxi driver made a little detour… pretending he couldn’t find the right street number… and if he really did – it is ok. I am happy to be here. Also happy with my choice of hotel http://www.ovolohotels.com. The room is very stylish but a bit small which is as apparently everywhere in this city. I good a cool view and just a few steps from Soho to go for a drink or dinner. Plus this place has a laundry room – so you can do the laundry yourself in a very casual way… fantastic for me who just sweated through half of my wardrobe in 3 days 🙂 Apparently there is also a gym but i am pretending that i haven’t seen it… yet!!  Maybe i should go for a quick run at some stage… i must be totally out of condition already! Vilicht doch echli meh carbon in Zukunft ha ha. Anyway this is just a check in report… more to come during the next couple of days. By the way, yes i am in HK and not Paris… in case you are irritated by the first pics.. but hey that was just on may way for a drink tonight… there is more to come i can assure you!

Yangshuo cooking school

Well… i love cooking and why not try to master some local delicacies yourself.. plus weather was so bad that an indoor activity wouldn’t harm. Thus Wednesday morning i met the cooking teacher and a girl from the UK who would learn cooking with me. However, before the fun starts, we first paid the local farmer’s market a visit to pick up some missing ingredients and get an impression what is for sale in such a market. Now i was warned by other posts that this market could turn you stomach upside down as there are some substantial differences between a market in Switzerland and one in China.

So we entered the first hall where everything looked pretty much normal except maybe the frogs and snakes that we passed when walking in. Lots of different vegetables and fruits beautifully piled up on tables, many familiar and of course some for Europeans unusual ones.

Starting to wonder what the warning was all about, we moved to the 2nd hall where you can by meat and fish. Unlike at home most of the animals are fresh for sale – i.e. alive.  So if you want to cook chicken you would select one from a cage, they tie their feet together and feet over head you can carry it home.. unless you would want to have it slaughtered on spot because you just don’t really feel like doing it yourself… which is also possible. Ok chicken was the easy example, but there were also rabbits, ducks, dogs and cats! Scrammed into cages looking miserable as if they knew what’s going to happen. I will save you the pics of these and show you here some goose and pig instead. By the way… when we left the market just one of these frogs managed to get out of the net/bucket and was jumping for his life… we kept our fingers crossed they will not notice / catch him again.

With a slightly uncomfortable feeling in our stomachs we left the market and drove off to the cooking school which was located in a small village in the countryside.  They had nicely prepared plates with all the ingredients and each of us had her own cooking station with a nice big chopping board and an even bigger chopping knife (i would love to get one of these for home!)

During the next 2 hours we learned how to cook: stuffed vegetables (pumpkin flower, mushroom and a dice of tofu) steamed in a bamboo basket. Beer fish a speciality of Yangshuo, aubergine with oyster sauce, chicken with cashew nuts and pak choi with garlic and chillies. Usually the teacher would first show us how to cook the dish by stirring and shuffling all the ingredients skilfully and as quick as a flash in her wok. By the time she had finished Alice and i had already forgotten how much of what needed to be thrown into the wok when and even less could we remember at what heat.. ha ha  But Amy our teacher patiently explained it to us again so that we managed to cook all these dishes close to perfection – at least thought it was delicious… yes absolutely travelicious!

Compass

not glamorous… nor delicious… but unbelivably travelicious if google maps produces streets in Chinese only…. and Baidu anyway!

travelicious mix of languages – travelicious kauderwelsch – travelicious talenmix – just to keep it exciting – so dass es interessant bleibt – zodat het spanned blijft – this will be a totally unprofessional multilingual blog – wird dies ein völlig unprofessionell geführter mehrsprachiger blog – zal dit een helemaal niet professioneel geschrevene meertalige blog worden – and i am sure you will have sometimes the chance to have a good laugh about it – ich bin mir sicher, dass ihr deshalb ein paar mal lachen könnt – ik ben ervan overtuigt (tja het kofschip kan ik nog altijd niet…dus sorry als het niet altijd juist is) dat jullie erover nog veel kunt glimlachen – because i will try to keep if exciting and funny for you – aber eigentlich probiere ich den blog einfach unterhaltsam und lustig zu gestalten  – omdat ik gewoon probeer deze blog voor jullie interessant en spannend te houden – as i will try to share my stories with you so that you know what i am up to – in dem dass ich meine erlebnisse mit euch teilen möchte, so dass ihr mehr oder weniger auf der höhe seid, was ich gerade mache – wanneer ik de verhaalen van mijn reis hier met jullie ga delen zodat jullie meer of minder op de hoogte zijn waarmee ik bezig ben –   because that’s what it is all about in my blog –  das ist der grund für dieses blog-übung – want dat is het doel van deze blog.
